There are phases in life where we start stressing over the littlest of things, feeling mentally drained by the end of each day. This is when we need to realise that nothing is worth it. No work deadline, no exam, no relationship is worth our health. The sooner we realize it, the better we can do to help ourselves come out of it and learn to see the bigger picture in life. Stress not only causes your skin to break out, or your hair to fall, but also ages you faster than normal. Adopting a few simple lifestyle changes can help us live a little better.
- LEARN A DANCE FORM
Learning a dance form is as good as discovering a new aspect of one’s self, and what’s better? Age is no bar! Dance is for everybody, younger or older. Besides being an excellent (and fun) form of exercise, dancing also helps release any kind of stress in your mind. As one learns the art to express through body movements, the mind gradually relaxes and begins to focus on the art – subconsciously setting free from all the stress and tension of our everyday lives.
Classical dance, freestyle Bollywood dance, jazz, salsa, zumba – there is a dance form that caters to every taste. I personally love classical dance, the music of Harmoniums and beats of the Tabla – a stress buster in itself!
- GET A MASSAGE
There’s nothing better than a good massage. From spas, to a masseuse at your doorstep or a free mommy on Sunday morning – any massage that involves aromatic oils and a good pressure enhances blood circulation in the body, soothes senses and relaxes the mind completely.
There are various pressure points in the body that have the ability to cure numerous ailments. For instance, a foot massage has the power of releasing an entire body’s stress. Taking time out to go for massages can effectively eliminate stress from our minds and bodies.
- GROOM YOURSELF
When you look good, you feel good. Long working hours often leave us with no self-time. As a result, grooming takes a back seat in the long list of our priorities.
Visiting the salon for a new haircut, or simply going in for a DIY pedicure at home – any form of physical grooming is a great way to unwind and helps de-stress. Book yourself an appointment at your favorite salon, turn off your phone and go all in. Come out looking and feeling fabulous! It is a guaranteed method of rejuvenation and relaxation.
- GREEN TEA THERAPY
There are phases when we can’t find time to join a dance class, or get a massage or even visit a salon. New mothers, people working on a time-crunch, stressed out students during exams, everyone goes through such phases. What we need to learn is to accept and make do with such a situation. Take out ten minutes, put out a kettle and make yourself a cup of green tea or your favourite tea. Sit down and enjoy it. Think about nothing but how great the tea tastes. Appreciate the goodness of this little cup of tea that has the power to make you deal with everything! You will be de-stressing in the greatest way by doing this. Appreciating the little things in life is a blessing indeed.
- ORGANIZE YOUR ROOM
Another positive way of dealing with stress is to organize all the clutter in your room/wardrobe/vanity/bathroom/living room! A clean environment aids positive thinking. In the process of cleaning, we tend to focus on our motive of removing what we don’t need, and organizing things in a better manner.
So put on some music, put your hair up, and get to work. The activity is proven to act as a great de-stressor. (Besides, we end up making our parents so happy. Clean room = parents’ life motive!)
