Whoever said long hair was unmanageable, didn’t have long hair!
Girl problems are incomplete without hair problems. Our love-hate relationship with hair has no bounds. Before and during experimenting with various haircuts, styles, and my recent highlights, I made sure to research well and in my experience, natural and home remedies have hands down worked best for my hair. My childhood obsession with hair, just like any other girl (I hope!) continues to grow, as I get nightmares about going bald or getting gum all over my hair… I can safely say – I am obsessed with hair and everything related!
The most common worry, rather insecurity of women about their hair is hairfall. First of, what most of us don’t know is – losing about 100-150 strands of hair everyday is completely normal. So whenever you run your fingers through your hair and a few strands come off, don’t worry about going bald! It is completely natural, and it all grows back. However, certain medical conditions including imbalanced thyroid levels, and certain medications too, lead to acute hairfall. In such a case, we must consult our doctors.
Hairfall otherwise can be a result of increased stress levels and/or a poor diet. Heat styling and coloring can seldom be the cause of hairfall, when done in excess or when proper care isn’t taken.
OVERCOMING HAIRFALL NATURALLY
THE DO’S :
A healthy diet : The first and foremost way to overcome hairfall is to have a diet rich in proteins and iron. Make an extra effort in including fresh, green and leafy vegetables in your diet. Fruits being sources of vitamin C are also equally important for hair as well as your skin. Nuts are sources of vitamin E which is also an important ingredient that your diet should include. In short, make sure to include the following everyday in your diet :
- A fruit of your choice
- An egg
- Walnuts and Almonds (about 5-7 pieces of each)
- Atleast 8 glasses of water
Hot oil treatment : Now this is a very important step that most of us tend to ignore, thanks to our laziness! This treatment not only cures hairfall, but also helps get rid of dandruff. A hot oil massage works miraculously, boosting hair growth to another level. This is especially important for girls with colored hair. Heat coconut or olive oil and apply it on your hair (get your mum to do it for you, she would be more than happy!), followed by a massage for a few minutes (this will boost the circulation of blood in your scalp). Take a hot towel and wrap it around your head, leave it on for 5-10 minutes and take it off. Let your scalp absorb all that oil for about an hour or two, and then head for a hairwash. My personal preference is to keep the oil on overnight, it relaxes me somehow. So, this step once a week will visibly make a difference to the quality of your hair, reduce hairfall and make them super shiny (my favourite bit).
All time favourite oils :
Relax! Stress is a major cause for hairfall and most of us don’t even realize how stressed we are until such problems start cropping up. And it’s not really possible to tell yourself to not stress, it’s the subconscious! Hence, some form of exercise or physical activity is always a good idea, be it morning yoga, dance aerobics or an evening walk. I personally prefer Yoga over everything else (cannot dress up every day for the gym!).
THE DON’TS :
- Avoid regular usage (by regular I mean every other day) of straighteners and heat-styling tools. And always make sure to apply a protecting serum before styling.
- Avoid having a really hot shower, as this can cause dandruff, and hair to fall.
- Never brush wet hair! Always use a wide toothed comb on wet hair.
- Avoid having long gaps between hairwashes. Alternate days are ideal. A dirty scalp is the most common cause for dandruff, hairfall and acne.
My next post shall talk about how to manage colored hair and everything related. Have a wonderful day girls!
