Magician Manish Malhotra’s couture collection – ‘The Empress Story‘ gave a glamorous and indeed a grand finale to the India Couture Week that took place in New Delhi last week. I have to admit, I was quite surprised when I saw the collection. He made a total drift from his usual intricate, shimmer and glitter to solid, bold and big. And of course he aced it. In my opinion, The Empress Story is about the current generation woman. Hate to use the cliche, but it totally fits! Strong, independent and beautiful.
Former Miss World and Bollywood actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan turned showstopper for her longtime designer buddy. The last time she walked the ramp for him was five years ago and surprisingly, not much has changed, except she looks more graceful than ever! Although I wasn’t very impressed with the outfit (in particular) that was picked for her to wear, but then, what good is a Miss World who can’t make an outfit look show-stopping?! That’s right, she nailed it!
Apart from the bold colors in the collection, I love how he transformed his signature fabrics from flowy Chiffons and Georgettes to stiff and heavy raw Silks. It is such a pleasantly refreshing change! However, the collection did have a streak of his statement style, but isn’t that what makes Manish Malhotra the Oscar de la Renta of Indian couture?
